Checking your session

Before you send it

A final check.
A clearer application.

Use this printable checklist on your actual downloaded resume. No design can guarantee that every applicant tracking system will interpret a file correctly.

Check the content

  • Confirm your name, email and phone number after importing a resume.
  • Check every employer, title, date and qualification against your original information.
  • Read the job’s essential requirements. Describe related experience accurately without claiming an unearned credential.
  • Remove placeholders and fictional example details. Keep only skills and results you can discuss.

Check the design

  • Use clear headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Give custom sections descriptive names.
  • Keep body text readable and text/background contrast strong. Do not shrink text just to force one page.
  • Check long company names, links and bullet points for clipping or overlap.
  • Avoid putting essential information only inside an image. A photo is optional and is not evidence of job fit.

Check the exported file

  • Follow the employer’s requested file format. PDF and DOCX can paginate differently.
  • Open the downloaded file—not only the browser preview. Inspect every page, especially section and bullet breaks.
  • Select and copy text into a plain-text editor. Check whether names, dates and sections remain understandable in reading order. This is a useful diagnostic, not an ATS certification.
  • Check contact links and remove accidental comments or tracked changes. Name the file clearly, for example Alex-Morgan-Resume.pdf.

Check the application

  • Make sure the file is the version tailored for this employer. Keep your base resume for future applications.
  • Read the cover letter for unsupported claims, wrong employer names and repeated generic wording.
  • Review the original employer posting and application destination. Saving or marking a job applied does not submit it.
  • Keep a copy of the files you submitted and record the date.

Not sure what to tailor?

Start with the job’s requirements and your real evidence. Move the most relevant experience into focus before adjusting the layout.
