Senior Software Engineer (Python)
RemoteRemote
About this role
First and most importantly: our mission is to bring transparency and clarity to the world's data.
Our platform, Voxel51, is where AI work happens. Our enterprise platform is the mission critical linchpin for managing unstructured data, model development, and AI systems at the world's largest companies.
Our software massively impacts AI work across almost every vertical: from self-driving cars to medical imaging to revolutionizing agriculture, we are at the thrilling center of real-world AI advancement’s next wave.
And we’re built on three key tenets:
- We are all human beings: we strive to be a “human-first” organization and treat everyone with the respect, care, and flexibility that all people deserve.
- We are distributed: we believe in getting autonomy and power into the hands of people actually doing the work
- We believe in the power of community
We are fully remote, hiring for people based in the United States, and who are prepared to travel to an occasional in person retreat.
About your role As a Senior Software Engineer at Voxel51, you’ll own the design and build-out of the core infrastructure that lets teams apply models to vast amounts of multimodal data (images, video, and beyond). You’ll work with a team delivering features across dataset curation, model analysis, and integrations that span the entire machine learning lifecycle, and you’ll be the technical owner for the systems that make large-scale model inference and evaluation reliable, fast, and extensible. You’ll build clean, scalable APIs, solve the unique challenges of working with unstructured data, and contribute to a thriving open source community while holding our commercial products to enterprise-grade engineering standards.
What you will do
- Own the architecture and implementation of core infrastructure for applying models (embeddings, detection, segmentation, VLMs, and custom models) across massive multimodal datasets, from orchestration and scheduling to result storage and retrieval.
- Design distributed, fault-tolerant pipelines for batch and on-demand inference over petabyte-scale image and video collections, optimizing for throughput, cost, and GPU utilization.
- Build the enterprise APIs, backend services, and UIs that expose this infrastructure to users, from individual researchers to Fortune 500 teams.
- Scale our enterprise solution, deployed in customers’ own clouds and on prem, to support the largest vision AI datasets in existence.
- Define the abstractions and extension points that let customers plug in their own models, data sources, and compute environments.
- Write production code that is maintainable, flexible, performant, and well tested.
- Contribute to the department through tooling, automation, observability, and best practices.
What you should bring
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building maintainable, scalable systems and architectures, including ownership of large backend or data infrastructure projects end to end.
- Experience building distributed systems or data/ML pipelines that process large volumes of data (e.g., job orchestration, queues, workers, batch and streaming workloads).
- BS or MS in computer science or a related field.
- Expertise with Python.
- Expertise with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, DocumentDB, Elasticsearch).
- Ability to work in a remote-first, collaborative environment.
- Experience with TypeScript is an asset.
- Experience with ML model serving or inference (GPU workloads, PyTorch, Triton, etc.), Kubernetes, and cloud object storage is an asset.
- Experience working with unstructured or multimodal data (images, video, embeddings) is an asset.
The cash compensation for this person is in the $200K - $225K range. In addition to base comp for this role, we offer equity in the form of options, a variety of benefits, and the opportunity to grow in an exciting and collaborative environment.
